Labour MP for Slough
Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi is the MP for Slough, winning in the 2017 General Election with a 17,000 majority, thereby becoming the first ever turbaned Sikh in any European Parliament. Born in Berkshire, having spent his formative years in Slough, Tan received most of his primary education in the Punjab, India, before returning to the UK when nine years old. He studied Mathematics with Management at University College London, MSc Applied Statistics at Oxford University, before an MPhil at Cambridge in South Asian history and its connections with Great Britain.
He’s worked most of his life in construction; even running his own small company in Scotland. Having served as a councillor for a decade, first elected in Gravesham in 2007, subsequently becoming the Mayor in 2011 and later Cabinet Member, he’s also served as Constituency Party Chairman, along with voluntary roles (School Governor; Alzheimer’s & Dementia charity Trustee; Mencap advisor; Police Advisory Group; etc). Polyglot in 8 languages: fluent in Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu, French and English, he has a working knowledge of German, Italian and Latin.
